Gangerh, isn't The Fourth Bear fiction? So why does it matter whether a character mentioned in the book is fact or fiction?

There are a couple of historically-based Shaftoe characters in Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle also (another work of fiction).

I'm not the one contesting fact and fiction here, reesetee. Or even grammar. I'm just playing with words.
You do raise an interesting point, though. The Fourth Bear is fictional and it does have people as fictional characters. Co-habiting this world there are characters that these fictional people know as being fictional to them. Characters from their books, stories, fables, nursery rhymes etc, the likes of Jack Spratt (who ate no fat), Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood, Dorian Gray, The Gingerbread Man, Punch and Judy. These characters are known as Persons of Dubious Reality aka PDRs.
*sigh*
If I've failed to get this across then I guess you have to read the book. It is highly entertaining (even to bears) and is more mature than it sounds.

Probably The Big Over Easy would be a better starting point as it did come as the first 'Nursery Crime' book. It deals with the case of Humpty Dumpty's demise, which prompted a murder inquiry conducted by The Nursery Crimes Division of the Oxford & Berkshire Constabulary.

I'm familiar with the books, gangerh. I suspect reesetee's comment was directed more at jmp, though. :) (Mine was just adding a voice to the "fiction" pile.)

No sighing required, gangerh. I wasn't suggesting you were the one contesting the words. I was asking you because you're the one reading the book. :-) Actually, I'm enjoying your Jasper Fforde additions quite a bit.

Ha! Just being careful, c_b and rt! I know how particular jmp can be! :-) And the sigh was against me because I felt I couldn't explain it adequately.
